We present the first numerical radiative transfer simulation of multiple light scattering in dust configurations containing aligned non-spherical (spheroidal) dust grains. Such models are especially important if one wants to explain the circular polarization of light, observed in a variety of astronomical objects. The optical properties of the spheroidal grains are calculated using the method.
Scattering by a multilayered scatterer is analyzed via a novel multiple-scattering approach. Based on the recognition that multiple scattering occurs within single scatterers having internal interfaces, the solution procedure follows the physical process, and yields analytically exact solutions.
The formal solution for the scattering of a plane wave by an arbitrary configuration of parallel cylinders previously presented is specialized to consider the case where all the axes lie in the same plane. The scattered wave is expressed as an infinite sum of orders of scattering, the first order being the usual single scattering approximation.
An approximation of radiation scattering based on angular averaging of the scattering coefficient is proposed. This approach yields a reduction of the problem complexity, which is especially interesting in uwb multiple antenna systems, because of the large bandwidth. Multiple scattering between radiators is shown to be a second-order effect.

In addition to multiple scattering, the radiation is scattered predom-inantly into the forward direction for the case of radiation incident upon relatively large particles. These conditions of multiple scattering and a highly anisotropic scattering pattern occur frequently in hazes, fogs, clouds, smoke, and dust.

This property is useful for volume scattering implementations, since it makes it possible to incrementally compute transmittance at multiple points along a ray: transmittance from the origin to a point can be computed by taking the product of transmittance to a previous point.

The result of either coherent scattering or the compton effect is termed scatter radiation or simply scatter. Radiation produced by the photoelectric effect is correctly referred to as secondary radiation. Since more than one type of interaction takes place during radiography and the resulting radiation is so similar, the terms are often used.
Definition multiple scattering is an effect due to propagation of waves through a medium characterized by a random distribution of discrete scatterers, usually embedded in a continuum medium.

Each kernel is multiplied by a factor, f, that weights the relative contribution of surface-scattering ( f geo) and volume-scattering ( f vol) to the measured brdf. The term f iso is included to account for isotropic scattering from the surface (in practice, this includes contributions from both single-scattering and multiple-scattering).

Scattering by a cluster or aggregate of spheres have been pre-dicted by (i) the superposition t-matrix method [16–23], (ii) the dda [24], and (iii) the volume-integral equation com-bined with the method of moments [25–27]. Most of the stud-ies on sphere clusters focused on radiation scattering and absorption by soot particles.
Unfortunately, single scattering models do not preserve energy. In this paper, we develop a microfacet brdf for specular v-grooves that includes multiple scattering. Our approach is based on previous work by zipin, who showed that the number of reflections inside a specular v-groove is bounded and analytically computable.
The rayleigh scattering model breaks down when the particle size becomes larger than approximately 10% of the wavelength of the incident radiation at which point mie theory must be applied. The mie solution is obtained through an analytical solution of maxwell’s equations for the scattering of electromagnetic radiation by spherical particles.
Approximate solutions for radii very small compared to wavelength are derived, the wavelengths for which the effects of multiple scattering are greatest are investigated, and a criterion for the use of the single scattering hypothesis presented. Solutions for two bosses and a single cylinder parallel to a nonabsorbing plane are also stated.
